Are you trying to figure out what the optimal STEPN Efficiency level is?
Perhaps you’ve been already been increasing the Efficiency of your sneakers, but for some reason, other users are still earning more GST than you are?
Well, don’t worry, because many people forget that the amount of GST you earn is influenced by many factors, not just the Efficiency attribute in STEPN.
In this guide, you’ll learn what the STEPN Efficiency attribute does, how you can earn more GST, and what you need to do in order to maximize the effect of your sneaker’s Efficiency.
Let’s get started!
Key Points (tl;dr)
- Efficiency is one of the 4 attributes of every sneaker NFT in the STEPN Move-to-Earn game. The Efficiency attribute can influence your ability to earn more GST per Energy spent during movement.
- Every time you upgrade your sneaker, you receive a certain amount of attribute points that you can assign to any of the 4 attributes, including Luck, Comfort, Resilience, and of course, Efficiency.
- The amount of points at your disposal depends on the quality of your sneaker (e.g. Common, Uncommon, Rare, etc) and ranges from 4 to 12 points.
- It is important to strike a healthy balance between the different attributes. Not only because other attributes become more important as you progress throughout the game but also because the effect of increasing your shoe’s Efficiency further and further has diminishing returns.
- Another way to increase your shoe’s Efficiency without actually adding attribute points is to add an Efficiency Gem to one of its Sockets. This will boost the impact of the Efficiency it already has.

Explained: How STEPN Efficiency Really Works

Here’s the answer. Great article by @ChrisHeidorn right here: https://tokenizedhq.com/stepn-efficiency/
What Is Efficiency in STEPN?
Efficiency is one of the 4 attributes of each sneaker NFT in STEPN. It is one of the factors that influence how many Green Satoshi Tokens (GST) a player can earn during gameplay. GST is STEPN’s main utility token and is required throughout the game.
One of the very first things that people realize once they start playing STEPN is that earning GST is crucial to their success in the game.
GST is STEPN’s utility token, which means that it’s the lifeblood of nearly everything you do in the game.
Yes, of course, there are other aspects of the game as well, but for the vast majority of players, GST is the primary metric that helps gauge their progress.
So it’s quite natural that players quickly reach the point where they ask themselves how they can increase their GST earnings as much as possible.
And that’s what the Efficiency attribute of your sneaker is for.
You see, every sneaker NFT in STEPN comes with 4 different attributes that impact gameplay.
We’ll have a closer look at all 4 of them towards the end of this article but for now, we’re going to focus on the Energy metric.
If you are playing STEPN in Solo Mode, then Efficiency plays a crucial part in your GST earnings.
A higher level of STEPN Efficiency will result in more GST earnings per Energy spent.
If you’re playing Marathon Mode, then Efficiency won’t impact GST earnings, but it will help you accumulate Leaderboard points faster.
So, since GST is important for gameplay, does that mean you should maximize Efficiency as much as you can?
Well, not necessarily.
It depends on what your goal is because most things in STEPN do not work on a linear scale.
Progression is usually associated with diminishing returns in order to keep the game challenging.
In the next section, we’ll take a closer look at what that means.
How to Earn More GST With Efficiency
In STEPN you can increase your GST earning potential by increasing the STEPN Efficiency attribute of your sneaker NFT. This is done by leveling up your shoe and adding the attribute points you receive to its Efficiency.
When you purchase your first sneaker NFT in STEPN, there are 2 things that impact your GST earning potential.
Each type of sneaker can only be used for a certain range of optimal speed and shoes made for faster speeds usually yield more GST per Energy spent.
This is something that is fixed.
The other thing that impacts GST earning is the STEPN Efficiency attribute.
Unlike your sneaker type, the STEPN Efficiency attribute can be improved quite a bit.
So the natural extension of that question is, by how much can you improve your GST earning via increased Efficiency?
Since STEPN’s whitepaper doesn’t provide details on the underlying math of the game, we have to work with the information that is available in the community.
Luckily, STEPNStats has compiled a huge database of crowdsourced data that helped create the following chart.
As you can see in the chart above, there are 4 trend lines representing a certain type of sneaker.
The Y-axis is the amount of GST that is earned per Energy spent and the X-axis shows the level of Efficiency that the sneaker has.
The outcome is quite clear: The more STEPN Efficiency your sneaker has, the more GST you will earn.
However, it is also fairly obvious that increasing the Efficiency of your sneaker has diminishing returns.
This means that each additional level of STEPN Efficiency will lead to a lesser improvement in your GST earning potential.
It’s hard to say where the optimal point is, mainly because there is a tradeoff between using attribute points for Efficiency or for Resilience.
Every time you gain new attribute points from leveling up your sneaker, your shoes’ repair costs also increase.
So if you’re using all your points for Efficiency and none for Resilience, your gains in GST might be offset by increased costs.
It is also unclear how big the impact of Efficiency Gems inside your sneaker’s STEPN Efficiency Socket is.
All of the factors are important and therefore make it quite challenging to determine the optimal combination.
But before you need to worry about any of that, you’re probably wondering how you can increase your STEPN Efficiency in the first place.
Well, let’s address that in the next section.
How to Increase the Efficiency of a STEPN Sneaker
You can increase the STEPN Efficiency attribute of your sneaker by upgrading your shoe and adding the attribute points you receive to Efficiency. As you upgrade further, you can also use Efficiency Gems and place them in their Socket to enhance your Efficiency even further.
There are effectively 3 ways you can influence the STEPN Efficiency attribute of your sneaker.
- Buy a sneaker with more Efficiency
- Upgrade the Efficiency of your sneaker during the next Level Up
- Place Efficiency Gems inside the Gem Socket of your sneaker
I’m not going to go into detail on how to buy the right sneaker because I think it’s pretty obvious that you can simply buy a sneaker that already has more Efficiency.
Leveling up your sneaker is a slightly different story.
The Level Up process within STEPN is absolutely critical to gameplay.
Initially, it is the primary way by which you can influence your success in the game.
When you level up a sneaker, you are effectively upgrading its capabilities.
Depending on the quality of the sneaker you own, you will receive more or less attribute points each time you level up.
You can then add these points to any 4 attributes you like and each one influence different aspects of the game.
When you add all of your points to Efficiency, you might end up neglecting other important aspects.
If you’d like to know more about the other 3 attributes, check out our guides on Luck, Comfort, and Resilience in STEPN.
Most people seem to prefer a 3:1 ratio between STEPN Efficiency and Resilience.
This is mainly because Comfort influences GMT earning, which only plays a role at Level 30 and Luck influences Mystery Boxes drop rates, which most people feel isn’t really worth it.
Mystery Boxes can contain valuable Gems that you can place inside the Gem Sockets of your sneaker (you must first unlock these Sockets by leveling up).
However, since these Gems can also be purchased on the marketplace, earning them from Mystery Boxes isn’t always worth the effort.
Nevertheless, Gems can have a serious impact on your Efficiency and thus also GST earning, so it’s definitely something worth looking into.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Before we wrap up, let’s quickly address a few frequently asked questions about the STEPN Efficiency attribute.
-
What’s the best combination of Efficiency and Resilience?
Most people stick to a simple 3:1 ratio. However, you can use one of the many STEPN calculations to simulate different combinations. Just be aware that they are not guaranteed to be 100% correct since most of the game mechanics and formulas are a secret.
-
Should I upgrade Efficiency or wait for GMT earning?
Unfortunately, there is no clear-cut answer to this question. It mainly depends on what your objectives are and what sort of sneaker you are using. Upgrading “Common” sneakers to Level 30 apparently isn’t necessarily worth the effort because you’ll have difficulty competing with others for GMT earning.
-
When do you stop adding points to Efficiency?
Since there are diminishing returns of adding more Efficiency, it mostly depends on what part of the game you enjoy most. The effect of some attributes can easily be upgraded with Gems, so you may not necessarily need to add many points to them.
Conclusion
Efficiency is widely considered one of the most important attributes in STEPN simply because it increases your GST earnings.
Given that there are so many factors that influence the game, no one can actually tell you what the perfect combination is.
Although GST is important for gameplay, it is unclear whether generating income via GST is actually a good idea or not.
It is entirely possible, and likely, that GMT will eventually become considerably more important than GST.
