What Are the 4 STEPN Attributes?
In STEPN, each sneaker NFT comes with 4 attributes of different levels. These attributes are Efficiency, Luck, Comfort, and Resilience, and each one influence a different aspect of STEPN’s gameplay.
Anyone who spends more than 5 minutes studying the rules of STEPN eventually stumbles upon the 4 sneaker STEPN attributes.
They are called sneaker attributes because they are properties that each sneaker NFT has.
However, nearly every sneaker will have different combinations of values for each one of the STEPN attributes.
They are essential to the way STEPN works so it’s effectively impossible to ignore them.
However, as descriptive as they may sound, it’s not always obvious what they actually do and how they influence gameplay.
STEPN’s whitepaper provides some guidance but it’s deliberately vague because many of the underlying mechanics are actually a secret.

The key to playing STEPN successfully, advancing through the game, and maximizing your earning potential is to understand how each attribute works.
It’s important to bear in mind that STEPN is a Move-to-Earn game that is still undergoing constant development.
Therefore, as you’ll quickly see, not all STEPN attributes are already relevant for the current gameplay and may be subject to changes in the future.
For example, it’s still not clear yet how important GMT earning will be once it is released.
That being said, we already know what STEPN attribute is meant for.
So let’s have a look at each attribute individually.
Efficiency
Efficiency is by far the most popular attribute because it directly influences your ability to earn GST.
GST is STEPN’s native utility token and it is required throughout the entire game.
As you advance through various levels, you will need more and more GST to unlock them.
Therefore it’s understandable that there is a lot of focus on GST.
However, a lot of people originally focused on GST simply because they were hoping to cash out their tokens for other cryptocurrencies.
Now that we are officially in a bear market, many players are upset and feel like they’ve been cheated (although we absolutely disagree).
Anyway, the more you increase your sneaker’s Efficiency, the greater your GST earnings per Energy will be.

Luck
Luck is a bit of a contentious attribute.
A lot of people like to increase their Luck attribute because it increases their chances of receiving a STEPN Mystery Box.
Mystery Boxes usually contain Gems or Minting Scrolls which are used to enhance sneakers or mint entirely new ones (check our STEPN minting guide for details).
In order to open them, you need to spend GST and time.
However, experience has shown that “Common” and “Uncommon” Mystery Boxes often do not provide a good return on investment.
Furthermore, many Mystery Boxes end up being completely empty as well.
That’s why some players have stated that you are better off purchasing the items you want directly on the marketplace, rather than hoping to find them inside Mystery Boxes.

Comfort
Comfort is the only STEPN attribute that currently has no purpose.
While we know exactly what it’s going to be used for, GMT earning hasn’t officially been rolled out yet.
GMT, unlike GST, doesn’t just have utility within the game, it is also the official governance token of STEPN.
No one knows exactly how Comfort will work, but it is safe to assume that it will have a similar impact on GMT earning as Efficiency does on GST earning.
If you’re not looking to generate income from GST, we highly recommend you focus on the longer term and try to work towards aiming GMT.
That being said, bear in mind that you may only be able to compete for GMT earning properly if you also have a higher-quality sneaker.

Resilience
Resilience is an underappreciated sneaker attribute.
While many people focus all their attention on increasing the Efficiency of their sneakers, they tend to forget that the repair costs of their sneakers increase with each level.
So even though you may be earning more GST than before, part of the improvement ends up going towards the maintenance of your STEPN sneaker.
Increasing the Resilience of your sneaker will reduce the loss in durability during usage.
Most players of STEPN try to strike a balance between Efficiency and Resilience at a ratio of 3:1.
This makes particular sense because increasing Efficiency has diminishing returns over time.

How to Improve Your Sneaker’s Attributes
You can improve the attributes of your sneaker NFT by leveling up your shoe and assigning the points you receive to one or more attributes. You can also enhance the effect of an attribute by placing Gems in their respective Sockets.
There are effectively 2 ways in which you can improve the effectiveness of your sneaker NFT’s attributes.
The first one is to increase the level of each attribute itself and the second one is to use Gems to enhance the existing attribute level.
You can increase an attribute by leveling up your sneaker.
Depending on the quality of your sneaker (i.e. Common, Uncommon, Rare, etc) you will receive between 4 and 12 attribute points after each upgrade.
You can then assign these points to any of the 4 STEPN attributes of your sneaker.
That is how you improve your sneaker over time and it also illustrates quite well why higher-quality sneakers are more useful than one might think.
As you progress through the different levels from 0 to 30, you will unlock extra features at different milestones.
At Levels 5, 10, 15, and 20 you unlock so-called Sockets on your sneaker.
Each Socket can hold a specific Gem that enhances a particular attribute and Gems also come in various different qualities.
Although Gems don’t directly increase a sneaker’s attributes, they allow you to boost the impact that an attribute already has.
