Well, look no further, because we’ve got through the entire whitepaper and have put together the ideal guide for your next shoe-minting event.
In this guide, you’ll learn what it takes to mint a new sneaker, how high the shoe minting costs are, and what your chances are of receiving rarer shoeboxes.
Let’s dive right in!
Key Points (tl;dr)
- In STEPN, the process of “shoe minting” is comparable to “breeding” in many other Play-to-Earn games. It involves using 2 different sneaker NFTs to create a new one.
- In order to mint shoes in STEPN, you need 2 sneakers, 2 minting scrolls, and sufficient GST and GMT to pay for the process.
- The cost of shoe minting depends on various different factors, including the quality of the Vintage sneakers and the price of GST at the time of minting. The base cost of shoe minting is 360 GST and 40 GMT, however, it will increase every time you re-use a shoe for another mint.
- Minting new shoes is a very easy 5-step process:
- Step 1: Select the first sneaker.
- Step 2: Tap the “Mint” button at the bottom.
- Step 3: Select the second sneaker.
- Step 4: Verify the total cost of minting.
- Step 5: Tap the “Mint” button at the bottom.

What Is STEPN Shoe Minting?
Shoe minting is the process of taking 2 STEPN sneakers and combining them in a “breeding” process in order to create a new Shoebox. Due to the number of variables that go into the process, many people try to optimize their STEPN minting strategy.
So you’ve probably been playing STEPN for a while now and you’ve most likely heard that you can mint new sneakers from the shoes that you already own.
Well, this process is called shoe minting and it is similar to the “breed” mechanism that you see in a lot of other Play-to-Earn games.
You basically take 2 existing sneakers (called “Vintages”) and mint them via the STEPN app.
Once the mint is completed, you’ll receive a new Shoebox.
Every sneaker NFT can be used in up to 7 shoe minting events, however, the associated STEPN shoe minting costs increase with each new mint.
Every sneaker also enters a 72-hour cool-down period after they’ve minted a Shoebox, during which they can only be used for movement.
Shoe minting used to be one of the primary ways how users generated profit within the STEPN game.
Unfortunately, this resulted in so-called “mint farms” that drove this practice to the extreme and completely flooded the market with sneakers, thus driving down their price.
Since then, STEPN has introduced a new game element called “Minting Scrolls” that represents an additional item that is required in order to mint new shoes.
STEPN minting scrolls are rare items, so the barrier to shoe minting has increased quite a bit.
Using the right STEPN minting strategy has become an important aspect of gameplay and that is why we’ve put together this STEPN minting guide for everyone’s benefit.
What Do I Need to Mint a STEPN Sneaker?
STEPN shoe minting requires at least two Level 5 sneakers that are not currently in use elsewhere and they must be fully repaired before minting. In addition to the GST/GMT spent during the mint, you must also be in possession of 2 Minting Scrolls of the same quality as the Vintage sneakers.
While it used to be very easy to mint new sneakers, additional requirements have been added to the game over time.
This is necessary in order to prevent massive inflation in the sneaker market.
At this point in time there are 4 key requirements for STEPN shoe minting:
- You must own at least 2 sneakers at Level 5 or higher.
- Both Vintage sneakers cannot be leased out to someone else and must have full durability.
- You need to have sufficient GST and/or GMT for the mint.
- You must own at least 2 STEPN Minting Scrolls of the same quality as the Vintage sneakers.
Minting Scrolls can be obtained from Mystery Boxes, however, do not expect them to drop in any Common or Uncommon Mystery Boxes.
If you do not want to wait until you find Minting Scrolls via regular gameplay, you can also purchase them on the STEPN marketplace.
Bear in mind that STEPN minting scrolls are “consumable” items that are permanently burned after use.
As you can see, the process has become far more complex over time and that’s why we created this STEPN minting guide for you.
By the way, if you only have 1 sneaker, you can still mint one if you find a friend who also has a STEPN sneaker.
All you need to do then is learn how to transfer sneakers in STEPN and you’ll be able to mint a new shoe together.
How Much Does STEPN Shoe Minting Cost?
Shoe minting costs depend on various dynamic factors, including sneaker quality and the price of GST in US-Dollars at which it trades on the market. The current base cost for minting 2 Uncommon Vintages is 360 GST + 40 GMT.
The objective of our STEPN minting guide is to give you the most detailed overview of everything you need to know in order to develop your own STEPN minting strategy.
STEPN shoe minting costs depend on a variety of factors, including the price of both GST and GMT tokens as well as the number of mints they’ve already performed.
The minting costs are also calculated separately for each sneaker because each Vintage might have different mint numbers.
STEPN reserves the right to change the cost of shoe minting from time to time in order to balance the supply and demand of its GST and GMT tokens.
On June 8th, 2022, STEPN introduced a new pricing system that adjusts to varying levels of the GST token.
the dynamic minting cost formula looks like this:
Minting cost = GST (A) + Base GMT (B) + Additional GM ([A+B]*x)
This translates into the following minting cost table:
GST greater than | GST lower than | Value of X |
---|---|---|
$4 | 0% | |
$4 | $8 | 50% |
$8 | $12 | 100% |
$12 | $16 | 200% |
$16 | $20 | 400% |
$20 | $30 | 800% |
$30 | $40 | 1600% |
$40 | $50 | 3200% |
$50 | 6400% |
We obviously do not have the complete picture of all possible sneaker combinations.
However, based on the new numbers, it seems the table below is a good approximation of the base cost for minting new sneakers.
That’s a lot of information to take in and that’s exactly why we’ve created this STEPN minting guide.
A Quick STEPN Minting Guide
While the calculation of the costs associated with minting new sneakers is very complex, the actual process of doing is incredibly simple.
Minting shoes is a very straightforward 5-step process:
- Step 1: Select a shoe with at least Level 5.
- Step 2: Tap the “Mint” button at the bottom of the screen.
- Step 3: Select a second shoe by tapping the silhouette.
- Step 4: Verify the mint price and tap “Mint”.
- Step 5: Receive your new Shoebox.
While most people will only receive a single Shoebox after a mint, your chances of receiving twin Shoeboxes increase with the higher mint value of your sneakers.
However, in the end, it’s all just one big lottery.
STEPN Shoe Minting Probabilities
As you may have noticed, even though your success in STEPN depends on your willingness to move, it also comes down to a lot of luck.
There are many random factors within the game, so you’re not always guaranteed the outcome you were expecting.
This also holds true for shoe minting, which is why a good STEPN minting strategy is important.
It will help you avoid investing too much time and effort into things that have a low chance of happening.
STEPN’s whitepaper has a very detailed overview of all the probabilities associated with shoe minting.
We’ve collected them in some useful tables below.
